Simply put, metabolism is the process that powers every single thing your body does. It’s how your body turns food into energy so you can move, think, breathe, grow and repair.

Without metabolism, your body wouldn’t be able to do anything at all. It keeps your organs working, your heart beating and your brain thinking, all thanks to tiny chemical reactions happening inside your cells every second of the day.

So, what is metabolism?

Metabolism is the process your body uses to convert food into fuel. It’s all about energy — the power your cells need to do their jobs. Every bite of food you eat gets broken down by enzymes, which are special proteins that speed up chemical reactions in the body, helping to break food into nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Your body then uses these nutrients for all sorts of important functions.

Even when you’re resting, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) keeps your body working quietly in the background. It keeps your temperature steady, repairs cells and balances hormones.

Metabolism has two main parts:

  • Catabolism: the breakdown of food molecules like carbohydrates and fats into smaller units that release energy.
  • Anabolism: the opposite process, where your body uses that energy to build and repair things, like new cells, proteins or muscle tissue.

Metabolism is all about balance. Your body is constantly switching between these two processes depending on what you eat, how active you are and how much energy you need.

Is metabolism what burns fat?

Your metabolism is controlled by a mix of your organs, hormones and cells. Hormones such as thyroxine from your thyroid gland and insulin from your pancreas help regulate energy use and storage. When these hormones are in balance, your metabolism runs smoothly, but if they’re too high or too low, your energy levels can be affected, sometimes leading to metabolic disorders.

Is a fast metabolism good?

A fast metabolism means your body uses energy quickly, burning more calories even at rest. It can be useful for staying active and maintaining body weight, but it’s not always “better.” Everyone’s metabolism is different, and the goal is balance, not speed.

Genetics

Your metabolism partly depends on the genes you inherit. Some people’s cells use energy quickly, while others use it more slowly. Scientists have discovered certain genes that influence how your body stores fat or uses sugar.8 While you can’t change your DNA, you can choose habits that help your metabolism function efficiently.

Age

As you grow older, your metabolism can slow down slightly.9 Children and teenagers tend to have faster metabolisms because they’re growing and their cells are very active. As adults age, they often lose muscle mass and their hormone levels change, which can lower their metabolic rate.   • Strength training (like lifting weights or doing push-ups) works your fast-twitch muscle fibres — the quick, powerful ones that help you move explosively. These fibres grow larger with training, which helps your body use sugar from food more effectively and keeps your blood sugar healthy.

Combining both types of exercise is the best way to keep your muscles strong, your metabolism active, and your body healthy. And remember, staying active doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym. Everyday activities, like walking the dog, gardening, dancing, or cycling to the shop instead of driving, all help boost your metabolism and keep your muscles working.

Diet and nutrition

Your body needs nutrients and calories to power all its chemical reactions. A balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins and healthy fats supports good metabolism.12

For most people, staying healthy with good food, rest and exercise is the best way to support metabolism.

Supporting a healthy metabolism

You can’t control everything about your metabolism, but you can make choices that help it work at its best. Here’s how you can support your body’s amazing energy system every day.

Eat balanced meals

Your metabolism needs fuel to work and that fuel comes from the food you eat. Eating regular, balanced meals gives your body the right mix of nutrients to turn into energy.

A healthy meal usually includes:

  • Carbohydrates (like brown rice, oats, quinoa, whole-wheat pasta, or sweet potatoes) to give your body energy.
  • Protein (like eggs, beans, tofu, fish, or lean meat) to help build and repair your muscles and tissues.
  • Healthy fats (like nuts, seeds, olive oil, or avocado) to keep your brain and hormones working well.
  • Vitamins and minerals (from lots of colourful vegetables) to help your body’s chemical reactions and keep it running smoothly.

When you skip food groups or eat too little, your body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs to keep your metabolism steady. That’s why balanced meals are the key to steady, lasting energy.

Stay active

Moving your body is one of the best ways to support a healthy metabolism. When you exercise, even just walking or cycling, your muscles use up glucose and oxygen to create energy.

This process also helps your body become more efficient at using the food you eat. Exercise strengthens your heart, builds muscle, and boosts your mood by releasing endorphins (chemicals that make you feel good).

Regular movement doesn’t have to mean intense workouts. Climbing stairs, dancing to music, or playing sports all count. The important thing is to move your body often and in ways that you enjoy.

Get enough sleep

When you sleep, your metabolism doesn’t switch off; it changes gears. Sleep is the time your body uses to repair tissues, make hormones, and balance energy use for the next day.

If you don’t get enough rest, your metabolism can become less efficient. Lack of sleep can cause your body to release more cortisol, a stress hormone that can slow down how your body uses energy. It can also affect insulin, which helps control your blood sugar.

Most children and young people need around 9–11 hours of sleep each night to help their metabolism and growth stay on track, whereas adults are advised to sleep 8 hours a night.

Drink plenty of water

Water might not seem exciting, but it’s one of the most important parts of a healthy metabolism. Every chemical reaction in your body needs water; from digesting food to carrying nutrients to your cells. 

When you’re dehydrated, even a little, your body’s energy-making processes slow down. Drinking enough water helps your kidneys filter waste, your blood move smoothly, and your cells turn food into fuel.

Try to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially after being active or spending time in warm weather.

Avoid skipping meals or extreme diets

Your metabolism works best when it has a steady, reliable source of energy. When you skip meals or follow extreme diets that cut out too many calories, your body goes into “energy-saving mode”.

That means your metabolism slows down to conserve fuel. Over time, this can make you feel tired, dizzy, or even cause muscle loss.

Instead, try to eat at regular times and listen to your body’s hunger signals. Eating enough and eating a variety of foods gives your metabolism what it needs to stay strong and steady.
